About This Event

The 2026 North Carolina Senate election is currently expected to be held on November 3, 2026. This market will resolve according to the margin of victory between the top two candidates in the specified election. The "margin of victory" is defined as the absolute difference between the percentages of valid votes received by the first-place and second-place candidates. Percentages of the valid votes received by each candidate will be determined by dividing the total number of valid votes each of the top two candidates receives by the sum of all valid votes cast in the election. For purposes of this market, candidates nominated by the Democratic & Republican Parties will represent the options for "Democrat" and "Republican," respectively. Independent candidates will not represent options for either party. The candidates may be named in the contract for the convenience of traders. In the event that any named candidate is replaced as the nominee of their respective party prior to election day, the name in the contract will be updated and the market will resolve based on the replacement nominee of the party. If the reported value falls exactly between two brackets, then this market will resolve to the higher margin bracket. If two or more candidates tie for the most valid votes in this election, and the tie is between two candidates listed, this market will resolve to the lowest margin bracket for the candidate whose ballot-listed last name comes first in alphabetical order. If the tie is between a listed candidate and an unlisted candidate, this market will resolve to the lowest margin bracket for the listed candidate. If the tie is between two or more unlisted candidates, this market will resolve to "Other." If the listed candidate is represented in this market group as "Republican" or "Democrat" their ballot-listed last name will still be used for tiebreaking. This market will resolve based on the official vote count once the count has been made official. If the election results are not known definitively by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to "Other". If a recount is initiated before the vote total has been made official, the market will remain open until the recount is completed and the vote is made official. The primary resolution source for this market will be the official results of the 2026 North Carolina Senate election as published by the state electoral authority responsible for certifying the results of the election; however, an overwhelming consensus of credible reporting may also be used.

What the contract measures

The supplied Polymarket event asks how the margin of victory in the 2026 North Carolina Senate election will fall. The margin is defined as "the absolute difference between the percentages of valid votes received by the first-place and second-place candidates" [1]. Only the Democratic and Republican nominees count as options. Independent candidates do not represent either party [1].

The rules also set several edge cases. If a reported value falls exactly between two brackets, the market resolves "to the higher margin bracket" [1]. Resolution uses the official vote count once it is certified, and if results are not known definitively by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, the market resolves to "Other" [1]. The listed end time is 2026-11-04T04:59:00.000Z [1]. Each bracket is a separate contract with its own wording, so a listed close time describes the contract, not the election result.

Reading the snapshot

The provider observed these prices at 2026-10-15T21:00:05.939Z, and the evidence was retrieved at 2026-10-15T23:09:50.073Z [1]. These are snapshots, not executable quotes or verified probabilities.

The sample includes all 10 saved markets for this event, and the saved sample is not marked partial [1]. The Democratic contracts with the highest Yes prices are 6%-9% and 9%-12%, both at 0.225, followed by 3%-6% at 0.165 [1]. The Republican contracts range from 0%-3% at 0.0355 to 6% or more at 0.005 [1]. Each contract's Yes and No prices sum to 1.00 in this snapshot, which is consistent with a single binary market.

Do not combine these prices into a total or compare them with other platforms. The evidence does not establish that the provider lists every possible real-world outcome, so a low price here does not show that an omitted outcome is less likely. Volume is not included in the evidence, so these prices say nothing about liquidity or how many traders hold a position.

What remains uncertain

The evidence does not explain why any price is where it is, and it contains no recent news, polling, or historical accuracy data for these contracts. The election date in the rules is described as "currently expected" for November 3, 2026, which is a rule description, not confirmed news [1]. The final margin, certification timing, and any recount are unknown from this evidence. Because this is a single snapshot from one provider, later prices may differ.

Overview

This PredictPedia contract concerns the margin of victory in the 2026 United States Senate election in North Carolina. The provider's rules define the margin as the absolute difference between the percentages of valid votes received by the first-place and second-place candidates, with each percentage calculated by dividing a candidate's valid votes by the total valid votes cast in the election [1]. The contract is therefore not a simple winner market. It asks how large the gap between the top two finishers will be, and it groups outcomes into brackets for each party. The rules map the options onto the two major parties. Candidates nominated by the Democratic and Republican Parties represent the "Democrat" and "Republican" options, and independent candidates do not represent either option [1]. If a named candidate is replaced as a party's nominee before election day, the contract name is updated and the market resolves based on the replacement nominee [1]. The election itself is described as scheduled for November 3, 2026 [1][2]. Resolution depends on official results. The provider says the market resolves based on the official vote count once the count has been made official, with the state electoral authority responsible for certifying results named as the primary source, although an overwhelming consensus of credible reporting may also be used [1]. If a recount is started before the total is official, the market stays open until the recount is completed and the vote is made official [1]. If the results are not known definitively by June 30, 2027 at 11:59 PM ET, the market resolves to "Other" [1]. The listed end time in the provider record is 2026-11-04T04:59:00.000Z [1]. That timestamp is a contract closing time in the provider record. It is not an announced date for when results will be reported or certified. The rules also address edge cases. If a reported margin falls exactly between two brackets, the market resolves to the higher margin bracket [1]. If two or more candidates tie for the most valid votes, the rules specify a tiebreak based on ballot-listed last names when the tie involves listed candidates, and resolution to "Other" when the tie involves only unlisted candidates [1]. These provisions determine how an otherwise ambiguous result would be settled.

Historical Context

The earlier 2020 North Carolina Senate election was held on November 3, 2020, to elect a member of the United States Senate for the state. It took place concurrently with the 2020 presidential election, gubernatorial and senatorial elections in other states, House elections, and various state and local contests. North Carolina was one of five states holding presidential, gubernatorial, and senatorial elections concurrently that year. Republican incumbent Thom Tillis and former Democratic state senator Cal Cunningham won their respective primaries on March 3, 2020 [3]. This background describes a past election. It does not describe the 2026 contest.

Why It Matters

The contract measures competitive distance rather than only which party wins. Because the margin is computed from the percentage gap between the top two candidates, it isolates how decisive the result is among the leading contenders [1]. Each bracket in the event covers a range of margins for one party, so the outcomes are organized by both direction and size [1]. The 2026 race is described as having Whatley and Cooper as the party nominees [2]. The rules tie the contract to the certified count rather than to early or unofficial reporting, which affects when the question can be settled [1]. Traders evaluating this event therefore need to read the margin definition, the tie and boundary rules, and the certification and deadline provisions closely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the margin of victory calculated?

The margin is the absolute difference between the percentages of valid votes received by the first-place and second-place candidates. Each percentage is the candidate's valid votes divided by the total valid votes cast in the election [1].

Do independent candidates count as options in this contract?

No. Independent candidates do not represent options for either party, and the Democrat and Republican options are tied to the nominees of those two parties [1].

What happens if a nominee is replaced before election day?

The contract name is updated, and the market resolves based on the replacement nominee of the party [1].

What happens if a margin falls exactly between two brackets?

The market resolves to the higher margin bracket [1].

What happens if the result is not known by the deadline?

If the election results are not known definitively by June 30, 2027 at 11:59 PM ET, the market resolves to "Other" [1].

Does a recount affect resolution?

If a recount is initiated before the vote total is official, the market remains open until the recount is completed and the vote is made official [1].

Does the listed end time mean results are expected then?

No. The listed end time of 2026-11-04T04:59:00.000Z is the provider's contract closing time. The rules say resolution follows the official vote count once it is made official, so the closing time does not establish when results will be certified [1].
