About This Event

Conor McGregor - Jan 1, 2028 If the first officially sanctioned MMA fight that Conor McGregor competes in is against X after Issuance and before Jan 1, 2028, then the market resolves to Yes. If Conor McGregor’s next fight after Issuance and before Jan 1, 2028 is against a fighter not listed in this event, or if Conor McGregor does not fight anyone before Jan 1, 2028, then all markets will resolve to No. To qualify, a fight must be an officially sanctioned professional MMA bout, exhibition bouts do not qualify, and must actually begin before Jan 1, 2028. Fights that are scheduled but are canceled, postponed, or otherwise do not take place before Jan 1, 2028 do not qualify. Current Market Outlook

Kalshi traders are pricing a Conor McGregor vs. Max Holloway fight at 99% confidence, which is about as close to a certainty as prediction markets get. The market essentially says there is no realistic scenario where McGregor's next opponent is anyone other than Holloway before January 1, 2028. This is a rare case where the market isn't hedging; it's telegraphing an outcome that appears already locked in.

The contract resolves based on the first fight McGregor takes part in, regardless of weight class or promotion. At 99 cents on the dollar, the expected value is nearly zero for anyone betting against Holloway.

Key Factors Driving the Odds

The UFC has been building toward this matchup for years, and the promotional groundwork is unmistakable. McGregor and Holloway have a history that goes back to 2013, when Holloway submitted McGregor in their first meeting, a loss McGregor has never avenged. That storyline alone carries massive pay-per-view appeal.

McGregor's return timeline has been pushed repeatedly since his July 2021 leg break against Dustin Poirier. He was expected back in 2023, then early 2024, then late 2024. The UFC finally pulled the trigger on a comeback fight against Michael Chandler at UFC 303, but McGregor withdrew with a toe injury. Since then, the promotion has stayed quiet about his next booking, which suggests they're waiting for the right opponent and the right date.

Holloway's stock has never been higher. His April 2024 knockout of Justin Gaethje for the BMF title was one of the most violent finishes in UFC history, and he followed it with a competitive loss to Ilia Topuria in a featherweight title fight. He's a proven star with a fan-friendly style, and he's been openly calling for the McGregor fight for months.

What Could Change These Odds

The obvious risk is McGregor's health and legal situation. He's had multiple injury setbacks, and his civil case for sexual assault in Ireland has created scheduling uncertainty. If that case drags on or produces a negative outcome, the UFC could pivot to a different opponent or McGregor could retire entirely.

There's also the possibility of a surprise opponent being announced that the market hasn't priced in. The UFC has a history of swerves, and McGregor has name-dropped everyone from Nate Diaz to Islam Makhachev. But at 99%, the market is effectively saying those scenarios are noise. The only way this doesn't resolve is if McGregor never fights again before 2028, which would require an unprecedented collapse in negotiations.

Given the promotional momentum, the public demand, and the fact that both fighters are healthy and active, the 99% price is fair. This is one of those rare markets where the only rational position is to accept the near-certainty and move on.

Overview

Conor McGregor, the Irish mixed martial artist and former UFC double champion, has not fought since July 2021, when he suffered a gruesome leg break in his trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Since then, McGregor has been sidelined, recovering from surgery, and engaging in a series of promotional activities, including coaching on 'The Ultimate Fighter' and starring in the remake of 'Road House.' His return to the Octagon has been repeatedly teased and delayed, with the UFC and McGregor himself floating various dates and opponents. The prediction market in question asks who McGregor will fight next, before January 1, 2028, with the market resolving based on the first fight he has starting on a specified date and before the deadline. This market captures the intense speculation and uncertainty surrounding McGregor's comeback, which has become a recurring saga in combat sports. Fans and analysts have debated potential opponents, from top contenders like Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira to fan-favorite matchups like Nate Diaz III or a clash with Michael Chandler, who was initially slated to face McGregor after coaching against him on TUF 31. The delay in McGregor's return has been attributed to his failure to re-enter the USADA testing pool (though he did in late 2023, only to withdraw), his acting commitments, and reported injuries. The interest in this topic is not just about the fight itself but about the broader implications for the UFC's lightweight division, McGregor's legacy, and his financial future, as he remains one of the sport's biggest draws. The market's resolution hinges on a specific event that has yet to materialize, making it a focal point for bettors and fans tracking every update from McGregor and the UFC.

Historical Context

Conor McGregor's rise to fame began in 2013 with his UFC debut, and he quickly became the sport's biggest star, known for his trash talk and knockout power. In 2015, he knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to win the featherweight title, and in 2016, he moved up to lightweight to defeat Eddie Alvarez, becoming the first simultaneous two-division champion. However, his career has been marked by layoffs and cross-over events, including a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in 2017, which he lost but earned an estimated $100 million. After taking time off for the birth of his first child, McGregor returned in 2018 but lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov in a highly anticipated bout. He then had a string of fights, including a 40-second knockout of Donald Cerrone in 2020, before facing Dustin Poirier twice in 2021, losing both, with the second ending in the leg break. Since then, McGregor has not fought, and his return has been a subject of constant speculation. The UFC's anti-doping policy, administered by USADA, requires fighters to be in the testing pool for at least six months before competing, which has been a major hurdle. McGregor re-entered the pool in October 2023, but withdrew in April 2024, citing a desire to fight outside the USADA framework, which led to the UFC parting ways with USADA and partnering with Drug Free Sport International. This change allowed McGregor to potentially return without the six-month requirement, but he still has not been booked for a fight. The history of McGregor's career shows a pattern of long layoffs, but none as long as his current absence, which will exceed three years if he doesn't fight by July 2024. The prediction market's time horizon of 2028 suggests that the market is hedging against the possibility that McGregor may never fight again, or that his return could be significantly delayed.

Why It Matters

The question of who Conor McGregor fights next matters for several reasons. First, McGregor remains the UFC's biggest pay-per-view draw, and his return would generate substantial revenue for the organization, sponsors, and the fighters involved. For example, his 2020 fight against Cerrone drew an estimated 1.3 million pay-per-view buys, and his 2021 bout with Poirier was one of the top-selling events of that year. A McGregor comeback could boost the UFC's bottom line, especially as the promotion faces competition from other combat sports and streaming platforms. Second, the outcome of his next fight could shape his legacy. McGregor's recent record is 1-3 in his last four fights, and another loss could tarnish his reputation as one of the greatest, while a win could reignite his career and potentially set up a title shot. The fight also has implications for the lightweight division, as McGregor's return could disrupt the title picture, with contenders like Makhachev, Oliveira, and Chandler all vying for big paydays. Third, the speculation around his return affects betting markets, fan engagement, and media coverage, making it a significant cultural event. Finally, for McGregor himself, the fight is financially crucial, as he has diversified into business ventures like Proper No. Twelve whiskey, but his fighting income remains a primary source of wealth. A successful return could lead to a lucrative boxing match or a blockbuster UFC fight, while a loss could force him into retirement. Thus, the market's resolution is not just about a fight but about the future trajectory of a sports icon.
