About This Event
This market will resolve to “Yes” if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures the entirety of Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast, (48.589446° N, 37.831430° E) between market creation and the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. Chasiv Yar will be considered captured if the entirety of the municipality is shaded under a below specified layer on the ISW map (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375) by the resolution date. Otherwise, the market will resolve to “No”. The boundaries of the municipality are those shown under the “Ukrainian Settlements” layer on the ISW map. If all area within the municipality is shaded under a qualifying layer, however, the shading does not precisely match up with the border such that there is a tiny amount of unshaded area along the border of the municipality, this will still qualify for a "Yes" resolution. For any change on the ISW map to qualify for this market’s resolution, the relevant shading must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update is published, regardless of the date. Any continuous shading under the following layers will qualify: - Assessed Russian-Controlled Terrain - Assessed Russian Advances Shading under the following layers will not qualify: - Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas - Claimed Russian Territory Once a qualifying condition is met, any subsequent loss of control will not be considered towards the resolution of this market. If Russia comes into control of the specified territory as a result of a negotiated settlement, this will qualify for a 'Yes' resolution, regardless of whether it is shaded under a qualifying layer on the ISW map. However, an announcement of a negotiated settlement that gives Russia de jure control will not qualify. Actual control must be established. The primary resolution source for this market will be the ISW Ukraine map. If the ISW map is rendered unavailable, information from DeepStateMap (https://deepstatemap.live/) may be used. If information from both the ISW and DeepStateMap are rendered permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used. Note: Any temporary glitches or errors in the map will not be considered.

What the contract measures
The contract asks whether Russia will capture all of Chasiv Yar by a specified date. It resolves "Yes" if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures the entirety of Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Oblast, between market creation and the specified date, 11:59 PM ET [1]. Qualifying shading includes "Assessed Russian-Controlled Terrain" and "Assessed Russian Advances," while "Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas" and "Claimed Russian Territory" do not count [1]. The shading must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle, and a later loss of control does not affect resolution once a qualifying condition is met [1]. A negotiated settlement giving Russia de jure control does not qualify, because actual control must be established [1]. If the ISW map becomes unavailable, DeepStateMap may be used, and if both sources are permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used [1].
The listed end time is 2027-01-01T04:59:00.000Z [1]. This is the provider's closing time, and it matches the 11:59 PM ET cutoff in the rules. It is not an announced event date.
Reading the snapshot
The saved Polymarket market, "Will Russia capture all of Chasiv Yar by December 31?", shows a Yes price of 0.245 and a No price of 0.755 [1]. The snapshot was observed at 2026-10-15T16:13:13.851Z and retrieved at 2026-10-15T18:58:09.602Z [1]. These prices describe that observed moment, not necessarily current conditions. They are snapshots, not executable quotes or verified probabilities.
The coverage record lists one market for this event, and the sample is not marked as partial [1]. Because this is a single binary contract, there is no other outcome in the sample to compare with, and no cross-platform comparison is made here. The snapshot does not include trader counts or explanations for the price level.
What remains uncertain
The evidence does not describe battlefield conditions beyond the map rules, and it does not explain why the prices stand where they do. Whether the ISW map will show the required shading before the close cannot be determined from this snapshot. The sample warning notes that providers may not list every possible outcome, so this record does not establish the full field of related contracts [1]. Readers comparing this contract with others should check each one's wording, resolution source, and listed close time, since those terms determine what a price represents.

Overview
This contract asks whether Russian forces will control all of Chasiv Yar, a city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, by the end of December 31. The contract is resolved by map shading rather than by news reports or official announcements. It resolves Yes if the entire municipality is shaded under one of two qualifying layers on the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) Ukraine map by the deadline, and No otherwise [1]. The contract's listed end time is 2027-01-01 at 04:59 UTC, which corresponds to 11:59 PM Eastern Time on December 31, 2026 [1]. The municipality boundaries are taken from the Ukrainian Settlements layer on the ISW map. A small unshaded strip along the border does not prevent a Yes resolution if the rest of the municipality is qualifying shading [1]. Qualifying shading must be continuous and must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, the shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update, regardless of the date [1]. Only two layers count: Assessed Russian-Controlled Terrain and Assessed Russian Advances. Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas and Claimed Russian Territory do not qualify [1]. Once a qualifying condition is met, later loss of that control is not considered for resolution [1]. The contract also addresses a negotiated settlement. If Russia gains actual control of the territory through a settlement, the contract resolves Yes even if the map does not show qualifying shading. An announced settlement that only gives Russia legal (de jure) control does not qualify, because actual control must be established [1]. If the ISW map becomes unavailable, DeepStateMap may be used as the resolution source. If both sources are permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used. Temporary glitches or errors in the map are disregarded [1].
Historical Context
Chasiv Yar is a city in Bakhmut Raion, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. It has been largely in ruins since the mid-2020s as a result of the Russo-Ukraine War. Its January 2022 pre-war population of 12,250 had fallen to approximately 600 by May 2024, according to RBC News, because of evacuations caused by Russian shelling and fighting within the city [2]. The Battle of Chasiv Yar began on 4 April 2024 with the first direct Russian assault on the city. By early August 2025, Russian forces had captured the district east of a canal running through the city, crossed the canal, and claimed capture of the city itself. As of December 2025, the ISW reported continued fighting in the city [3]. These are historical accounts from the cited Wikipedia articles, and the most recent point they describe is December 2025. They do not establish the control situation on the date of this snapshot.
Why It Matters
The contract measures a specific, rule-based outcome: whether the ISW map shows the whole municipality under qualifying Russian control or advance shading by the deadline [1]. Because it turns on a single map and a defined set of layers, the result depends on the map's shading rules rather than on general descriptions of the front line. The shading requirements, persistence rule, and exclusion of infiltration and claimed areas all affect whether a partial or contested situation would count [1]. The historical background explains why the city is contested, but the contract itself is decided only by the map and the rules above [1][3].

Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a Yes resolution?
A Yes resolution requires the entire Chasiv Yar municipality to be shaded under Assessed Russian-Controlled Terrain or Assessed Russian Advances on the ISW map, with that shading persisting through the next full ISW update cycle, by the deadline [1].
Do infiltration areas or claimed territory count?
No. Shading under Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas and Claimed Russian Territory does not qualify for resolution [1].
Does a peace or negotiated settlement resolve the contract?
A negotiated settlement that gives Russia actual control of the territory qualifies for Yes even without qualifying map shading. An announcement that gives Russia only de jure control does not qualify [1].
What happens if the ISW map is unavailable?
DeepStateMap may be used. If both the ISW map and DeepStateMap are permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used [1].
Does the contract end on December 31?
The contract title refers to December 31, and the listed end time is 2027-01-01 at 04:59 UTC, which is 11:59 PM Eastern Time on December 31 [1].
