About This Event

The 2026 Virginia Senate election is currently expected to be held on November 3, 2026. This market will resolve according to the margin of victory between the top two candidates in the specified election. The "margin of victory" is defined as the absolute difference between the percentages of valid votes received by the first-place and second-place candidates. Percentages of the valid votes received by each candidate will be determined by dividing the total number of valid votes each of the top two candidates receives by the sum of all valid votes cast in the election. For purposes of this market, candidates nominated by the Democratic & Republican Parties will represent the options for "Democrat" and "Republican," respectively. Independent candidates will not represent options for either party. The candidates may be named in the contract for the convenience of traders. In the event that any named candidate is replaced as the nominee of their respective party prior to election day, the name in the contract will be updated and the market will resolve based on the replacement nominee of the party. If the reported value falls exactly between two brackets, then this market will resolve to the higher margin bracket. If two or more candidates tie for the most valid votes in this election, and the tie is between two candidates listed, this market will resolve to the lowest margin bracket for the candidate whose ballot-listed last name comes first in alphabetical order. If the tie is between a listed candidate and an unlisted candidate, this market will resolve to the lowest margin bracket for the listed candidate. If the tie is between two or more unlisted candidates, this market will resolve to "Other." If the listed candidate is represented in this market group as "Republican" or "Democrat" their ballot-listed last name will still be used for tiebreaking. This market will resolve based on the official vote count once the count has been made official. If the election results are not known definitively by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to "Other". If a recount is initiated before the vote total has been made official, the market will remain open until the recount is completed and the vote is made official. The primary resolution source for this market will be the official results of the 2026 Virginia Senate election as published by the state electoral authority responsible for certifying the results of the election; however, an overwhelming consensus of credible reporting may also be used.

What the contract measures

The contracts resolve on the margin of victory in the 2026 Virginia Senate election, defined as the absolute difference between the valid-vote percentages of the first- and second-place candidates [1]. Only the Democratic and Republican nominees count as options. Independent candidates do not count for either party [1]. The source says the election is "currently expected to be held on November 3, 2026" [1].

Wording matters for the individual brackets. Some are written as ranges such as "by 18%-21%," while others are open-ended, such as "by 21% or more" and "by 3% or more" [1]. The source also states that if a reported value falls exactly between two brackets, the market resolves to the higher margin bracket [1]. The listed end time is 2026-11-04T04:59:00Z [1]. Resolution depends on the official count being certified, and if results are not known definitively by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, the market resolves to "Other" [1]. That June 2027 date is a contract rule, not an announced event.

Reading the snapshot

The saved sample contains all ten markets for this provider event, and the record reports no partial sample [1]. The provider observed the prices at 2026-10-16T21:00:06Z, and the record was retrieved at 2026-10-17T00:31:45Z [1]. These are historical snapshots, not live quotes.

The highest Yes price in the sample is 0.425 for the Democratic candidate winning by 21% or more [1]. Other Yes prices include 0.166 for a Democratic win by 18% to 21%, 0.165 for 15% to 18%, and 0.115 for 12% to 15% [1]. Lower-margin brackets carry smaller Yes prices, including 0.004 for a Republican win by 3% or more [1]. These figures are prices in a snapshot, not executable quotes or verified probabilities.

Because the brackets are separate contracts with different boundaries, the prices should not be combined into a single average or compared as if they were the same outcome. The price difference between two contracts is not an arbitrage opportunity by itself.

What remains uncertain

The record includes a warning that the providers may not list every possible real-world outcome [1]. The sample therefore does not show the full field of results, and an omitted result should not be assumed to have a lower price. The snapshot also does not explain why any price was where it was, and it does not show trading volume, liquidity, or the number of participants. The official certified result will determine resolution, and nothing in the supplied evidence reports on the election's outcome.

Overview

This PredictPedia entry covers a contract on the margin of victory in the 2026 Virginia Senate election. The source describes the election as expected to be held on November 3, 2026 [1]. The contract does not ask who wins. It asks how large the gap is between the two leading candidates, measured in percentage points of valid votes. The margin is defined as the absolute difference between the percentages of valid votes received by the first-place and second-place candidates. Each candidate's percentage is calculated by dividing that candidate's valid votes by the total valid votes cast in the election [1]. Because the measure uses an absolute difference, the direction of the win does not change the margin figure. Brackets are then separated by party, so a contract may specify that the Democratic Party candidate wins by a given range, or that the Republican Party candidate wins by a given range [1]. The rules define the party options narrowly. Candidates nominated by the Democratic and Republican Parties represent the "Democrat" and "Republican" options, and independent candidates do not represent either option [1]. If a named nominee is replaced before election day, the contract name is updated and the market resolves based on the replacement nominee [1]. Names in the contract are included for trader convenience, according to the rules [1]. The resolution process has several specific steps. The market resolves on the official vote count once that count is made official, and the primary source is the official results published by the state electoral authority responsible for certifying the election. Credible reporting may also be used where there is an overwhelming consensus [1]. If a recount starts before the total is official, the market stays open until the recount is complete and the vote is certified [1]. The listed end time is 2026-11-04T04:59:00.000Z [1]. That timestamp is the contract's closing time, not a date on which results are known or certified. Boundary and tie rules also matter. If the reported margin falls exactly between two brackets, the contract resolves to the higher margin bracket [1]. If two candidates tie for the most valid votes and both are listed, the contract resolves to the lowest margin bracket for the candidate whose ballot-listed last name comes first alphabetically. If a listed candidate ties with an unlisted candidate, the contract resolves to the lowest margin bracket for the listed candidate. A tie between two or more unlisted candidates resolves to "Other" [1]. The contract also has a fallback. If the election results are not known definitively by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, the market resolves to "Other" [1]. The price figures shown alongside this entry are a snapshot of market prices at one observation time. They are not executable quotes or verified probabilities, and trading volume does not indicate liquidity or the number of participants.

Why It Matters

The contract measures how wide the winning margin will be in the Virginia Senate race, expressed as the gap in percentage points between the top two candidates' shares of valid votes [1]. Because the brackets are grouped by party, the contract is shaped by which party's candidate finishes first and by how large that candidate's lead is [1]. The resolution rules, including the certification requirement, the recount rule, the boundary rule and the fallback date, determine exactly when and how the contract settles [1]. Anyone reading the contract should check these rules directly, since small wording details such as the handling of independents and ties change the outcome.

Snapshot context

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the margin of victory calculated?

The margin is the absolute difference between the percentages of valid votes received by the first-place and second-place candidates. Each percentage is the candidate's valid votes divided by the sum of all valid votes cast in the election [1].

Do independent candidates count in this contract?

No. Independent candidates do not represent options for either party, and the Democrat and Republican options refer to the candidates nominated by those parties [1].

What happens if a candidate is replaced before election day?

The name in the contract is updated, and the market resolves based on the replacement nominee of the party [1].

What happens if the margin falls exactly between two brackets?

The contract resolves to the higher margin bracket [1].

When does the contract resolve?

The market resolves on the official vote count once it has been made official. If a recount is started before the total is official, the market stays open until the recount is complete and the vote is certified. If results are not known definitively by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, the market resolves to "Other" [1].
