About This Event
This market will resolve to “Yes” if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures the intersection at 48.608982° N, 37.720231° E in Viroliubivka, Donetsk Oblast, between market creation and the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. The intersection will be considered captured if any part of the intersection is shaded under a below specified layer on the ISW map (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375) by the resolution date. Otherwise, the market will resolve to “No”. For any change on the ISW map to qualify for this market’s resolution, the relevant shading must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle. If ISW skips a day, shading must persist until the next finalized ISW update is published, regardless of the date. Any continuous shading under the following layers will qualify: - Assessed Russian-Controlled Terrain - Assessed Russian Advances Shading under the following layers will not qualify: - Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas - Claimed Russian Territory Once a qualifying condition is met, any subsequent loss of control will not be considered towards the resolution of this market. If Russia comes into control of the specified territory as a result of a negotiated settlement, this will qualify for a 'Yes' resolution, regardless of whether it is shaded under a qualifying layer on the ISW map. However, an announcement of a negotiated settlement that gives Russia de jure control will not qualify. Actual control must be established. If the ISW map is rendered unavailable, information from DeepStateMap (https://deepstatemap.live/) may be used. If information from both the ISW and DeepStateMap are rendered permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used. Note: Any temporary glitches or errors in the map will not be considered.

What the contract measures
The contract asks whether Russia will capture a specific intersection in Viroliubivka, Donetsk Oblast, by December 31 [1]. It resolves "Yes" if, according to the ISW map, Russia captures the intersection between market creation and the specified date, 11:59 PM ET [1]. Capture requires that any part of the intersection be shaded under "Assessed Russian-Controlled Terrain" or "Assessed Russian Advances" [1]. Shading under "Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas" or "Claimed Russian Territory" does not qualify [1]. A negotiated settlement can qualify, but "Actual control must be established" [1]. The primary source is the ISW Ukraine map. DeepStateMap is the fallback, and a consensus of credible reporting applies if both are permanently unavailable [1].
Reading the snapshot
The saved snapshot was observed on October 15, 2026 at 21:00 UTC. It shows one active Polymarket market, with "Yes" at 0.11 and "No" at 0.89 [1]. These are snapshot prices, not executable quotes or verified probabilities. The listed end time is 2027-01-01T04:59:00.000Z, which the contract text corresponds to as 11:59 PM ET on December 31 [1]. This is the listed close, not an announced event date. The snapshot does not show whether prices have changed since it was observed.
The evidence contains only this one contract, so it is a single-market sample. It does not allow comparison with other platforms or other Viroliubivka contracts, and no volume figure is supplied, so no conclusions about liquidity or trader activity can be drawn.
What remains uncertain
The evidence does not explain why prices sit where they do. It also does not report recent battlefield developments, the current ISW map beyond the saved excerpt, or any negotiations. The resolution depends on map shading that must persist through the next full ISW update cycle, so a brief change may not count, and later loss of control does not affect a qualifying "Yes" [1]. Readers should check the resolution sources directly before treating any price as informative.

Overview
Will Russia capture Viroliubivka by...? is a Politics contract listed on Polymarket. The event record describes a single market asking whether Russia will capture a specific intersection in Viroliubivka, a settlement in Donetsk Oblast [1]. The contract is tied to one location rather than to the settlement as a whole. The record gives the intersection's coordinates as 48.608982° N, 37.720231° E [1]. The market's wording asks about control of that intersection, not a general claim about the town. The resolution path depends on maps and reporting, so the contract's rules matter as much as the question's headline. The listed end time is 2027-01-01T04:59:00Z, which the rules express as 11:59 PM ET on the specified date [1]. That is a closing time written into the contract rules. It is not an announced event date.
Historical Context
The supplied Wikipedia material consists of timeline pages covering the Russo-Ukrainian war for two periods: 1 August to 31 December 2024 [2], and 1 January to 31 May 2026 [3]. These pages establish that the war's chronology is organized into timelines by period. The retrieved material does not describe the Viroliubivka intersection or the events that led to this market, so no further history can be drawn from it.
Why It Matters
The contract measures whether the specified intersection comes under Russian control within the market's window, as shown on the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) Ukraine map [1]. The rules name that map as the primary resolution source [1]. Shading under the layers "Assessed Russian-Controlled Terrain" and "Assessed Russian Advances" qualifies, while shading under "Assessed Russian Infiltration Areas" and "Claimed Russian Territory" does not [1]. The shading must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle to count, and temporary map glitches are disregarded [1]. Once a qualifying condition is met, later loss of control does not affect the outcome [1]. The rules also address a negotiated settlement. If Russia comes into control through such a settlement, the contract resolves Yes whether or not the area is shaded on the map. An announced settlement that gives Russia de jure control does not qualify, because actual control must be established [1].

Frequently Asked Questions
What area does the contract cover?
It covers one specified intersection in Viroliubivka, Donetsk Oblast, at 48.608982° N, 37.720231° E, not the whole settlement [1].
Which map decides the outcome?
The primary source is the ISW Ukraine map. If that map is unavailable, DeepStateMap may be used. If both are permanently unavailable, a consensus of credible reporting may be used [1].
Does a shaded area need to stay shaded?
Yes. The relevant shading must persist through the next full ISW daily update cycle, or until the next finalized ISW update if a day is skipped [1].
Does an announced agreement give Russia a Yes?
Not by announcement alone. A negotiated settlement that gives Russia de jure control does not qualify, but a settlement that gives Russia actual control does [1].
What happens if control is lost after a qualifying condition is met?
A later loss of control is not considered toward resolution once a qualifying condition has been met [1].
