About This Event

This market will resolve to “Yes” if there is a direct or indirect diplomatic meeting between the United States and North Korea by the listed date, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No”. A diplomatic meeting occurs when representatives of both listed countries who are acting in an official capacity and are authorized to engage in diplomacy on behalf of their respective governments or governing authorities deliberately meet for the purpose of diplomacy or negotiation. A qualifying meeting need not result in any agreement, joint statement, or further engagement. A direct meeting refers to a diplomatic meeting where the representatives of both countries directly interact with each other in person. Meetings conducted through translators qualify, provided direct, face-to-face communication occurs. An indirect meeting refers to a meeting conducted indirectly through designated mediators or facilitators. A qualifying indirect meeting must meet both of the following criteria (i) the designated intermediaries act with the knowledge and authorization of both entities; (ii) representatives of both entities are physically present in the same facility, venue, or city as part of a single organized round of talks convened for the purpose of diplomatic engagement, with the intermediary conveying communications between the representatives or delegations on the same day. “The same day” means the same calendar day local time at the meeting location. Sessions, proceedings, or convenings of standing international organizations, treaty bodies, or recurring multilateral summits or conferences (e.g., the United Nations General Assembly, G7, and G20 summits) do not qualify, unless a qualifying and deliberate diplomatic meeting between representatives of the listed countries is separately held alongside such a convening. The following do not qualify as either a direct or indirect diplomatic meeting: chance encounters; standalone exchanges limited to greetings, courtesies, or photo opportunities; meetings conducted remotely, by telephone, or by any other means where the relevant representatives are not physically present at the same facility, venue, or city on the same day; discussions involving persons not authorized to engage in diplomacy or negotiation on behalf of their respective governments. The resolution sources for this market will be official information from the governments of the United States and North Korea and a consensus of credible reporting.

This analysis is awaiting a background update, so its prices may be older than the odds above.

What the contract measures

The Polymarket contract asks whether the United States and North Korea will hold a diplomatic meeting by December 31, 2026 [1]. The rules say the market resolves "Yes" if there is "a direct or indirect diplomatic meeting" between the two countries by the listed date, 11:59 PM ET [1]. A direct meeting requires face-to-face interaction, and an indirect meeting requires intermediaries acting with the knowledge of both sides, with representatives physically present in the same facility, venue, or city as part of a single organized round of talks [1].

The rules also exclude several kinds of contact. Remote, telephone, and other non-physical meetings do not count, and so do standalone exchanges limited to "greetings, courtesies, or photo opportunities" [1]. Multilateral convenings such as the United Nations General Assembly, G7, and G20 summits do not qualify unless a separate, qualifying meeting is held alongside them [1]. The rules add that a qualifying meeting "need not result in any agreement, joint statement, or further engagement" [1].

The listed end time is 2027-01-01T04:59:00.000Z [1]. This is the provider's closing timestamp, which corresponds to the 11:59 PM ET cutoff in the rules. It is not a scheduled event date, and the evidence contains no announced meeting.

Reading the snapshot

The provider observation time is 2026-10-18T06:00:06.106Z, and the source was retrieved at 2026-10-18T06:58:06.991Z [1]. The prices below describe that moment only and are not live quotes.

  • Yes: 0.145 [1]
  • No: 0.855 [1]

These are quoted prices from one saved binary market. They are not executable quotes, and they are not verified probabilities. The sample contains one market from one event, and the coverage record marks it as complete, so no outcome in this market was omitted [1]. The provider's sample warning also notes that it does not establish that every possible real-world outcome is listed [1].

The evidence contains no trading volume or trader count, so it does not show how liquid this market is or how many participants hold each position. The evidence also does not explain why the price is where it is.

What remains uncertain

The evidence does not include any reporting on current US-North Korea contacts, so it cannot tell a reader whether a meeting is being planned. Because the rules require a physically present, deliberately organized meeting, a reader should check the exact wording against any other source, since informal or remote contact would not resolve the market as "Yes" [1].

Overview

This PredictPedia contract asks whether the United States and North Korea will hold a diplomatic meeting by the listed deadline of 11:59 PM ET on December 31, 2026. It resolves "Yes" if a qualifying meeting takes place by then and "No" otherwise [1]. The contract's rules set a narrow definition of what counts, so the wording matters more than the headline question. A qualifying meeting requires representatives of both countries who act in an official capacity and are authorized to engage in diplomacy for their governments. The meeting must be held deliberately for diplomacy or negotiation. It does not need to produce an agreement, a joint statement, or further engagement [1]. The contract recognizes two forms. A direct meeting involves representatives interacting face to face in person, and meetings conducted through translators still qualify [1]. An indirect meeting is conducted through designated intermediaries who act with the knowledge and authorization of both sides. Under the rules, both delegations must be physically present in the same facility, venue, or city as part of a single organized round of talks, and the intermediary must convey communications between them on the same calendar day, local time at the meeting location [1]. The rules exclude several kinds of contact. Chance encounters do not count, nor do exchanges limited to greetings, courtesies, or photo opportunities. Remote contacts by telephone or other means do not count unless both representatives are physically present in the same place on the same day. Discussions involving people not authorized to negotiate for their governments are also excluded [1]. Sessions of standing international bodies or recurring multilateral summits, such as the United Nations General Assembly, G7, and G20 summits, do not qualify by themselves. A separate, deliberate bilateral meeting held alongside such a gathering could qualify [1]. The resolution sources are official information from the governments of the United States and North Korea, along with a consensus of credible reporting [1].

Historical Context

The Korean War was an armed conflict fought on the Korean Peninsula between North Korea and South Korea and their allies. North Korea was supported by China and the Soviet Union, while South Korea was supported by the United Nations, led by the United States under the United Nations Command [2]. According to the Wikipedia article on North Korea and United States relations as retrieved for this contract, the two countries have no formal diplomatic relations and have instead used an indirect arrangement through neutral intermediaries. The Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang serves as the U.S. protecting power and provides limited consular services to U.S. citizens. North Korea does not have an embassy in Washington, D.C., and is represented in the United States through its mission to the United Nations in New York City [3]. This description reflects the article's content at retrieval and does not confirm the current state of relations.

Why It Matters

The contract measures whether formal contact between the two governments occurs within a defined window. Because the definitions require authorized officials, a physical venue, and either face-to-face talks or a single organized round of mediated talks, the contract separates deliberate diplomacy from informal or remote contact [1]. Its wording also means that a meeting without an agreement still counts, while many everyday contacts do not [1].

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a phone call or video call between the two governments count?

Not by itself. Meetings conducted remotely or by telephone count only if the representatives are physically present at the same facility, venue, or city on the same day [1].

Does the meeting need to produce an agreement?

No. A qualifying meeting need not result in any agreement, joint statement, or further engagement [1].

Do both countries attending the same UN General Assembly or G20 session count as a meeting?

Not automatically. Sessions of standing international organizations and recurring multilateral summits do not qualify unless a separate, deliberate diplomatic meeting between the listed countries is held alongside them [1].

Does an intermediary passing messages count as an indirect meeting?

Only if the intermediary acts with the knowledge and authorization of both sides, both delegations are physically present in the same facility, venue, or city as part of a single organized round of talks, and the intermediary conveys communications on the same calendar day [1].
